What does 'matching numbers' mean on a classic car?

Short answer

'Matching numbers' means the major parts still carry the numbers the factory recorded for that car. Usually that's the engine, and sometimes the gearbox and diff too. It's proof of originality, so it often adds a premium. Ask what 'matching' covers, and get proof from factory records, not the seller's word alone.

How to check

  • Compare engine and chassis stamps with build records or a heritage certificate
  • Ask the marque club; many keep registers
  • Look for signs of re-stamping

When it matters most

Homologation and high-value cars (for example a Falcon GTHO or an early E-Type) show the biggest gap between matching and non-matching cars.
