What records should come with a restored JDM instrument cluster?
Short answer
Keep the before-and-after odometer reading, dated photos, the repair invoice and a clear description of every part changed. The paperwork should distinguish repair from mileage verification: a restored cluster does not prove the car's full distance history on its own.
Before the cluster leaves the car
- Photograph the installed cluster and odometer
- Record the chassis number separately in your private vehicle file
- Note any known odometer replacement or prior repair
- Back up service records that support the displayed distance
Ask the specialist to record
- Date received and returned
- Displayed distance before and after work
- Faults found and tests performed
- Components repaired or replaced
- Any calibration work and the equipment used
Keep the claim narrow
A specialist invoice proves the work described on that invoice. It does not, by itself, verify the car's identity, legal title or complete mileage history. Keep it alongside service books, registration records and prior invoices.
