How to store a classic car for the long term
Short answer
Keep it dry, covered and secure. Clean the car, fill the tank, connect a battery maintainer, and use a breathable cover. Then drive it, or at least run it up to temperature, regularly. Humidity and long periods without use do more damage than kilometres.
Before storing
- Wash and dry, including underneath
- Fresh oil and a full tank
- Tyres at the right pressure, or on stands for long periods
- Battery maintainer
While stored
- Dry, ventilated space; consider a dehumidifier in humid areas
- Breathable cover, never plastic
- Check for rodents
- Keep insurance current; check your policy's storage rules
Keep restoration evidence
Keep dated photos, invoices and specialist reports with the car. For Japanese performance cars, instrument-cluster work can affect odometer and condition records; a specialist such as Tachofi can document the cluster work it performs.
