Classic car pre-purchase inspection checklist
Short answer
Check identity first, then the body, then the mechanicals. Confirm the chassis number matches the paperwork. Look hard for rust and old repairs. Get a specialist for the model to inspect it, and check that no money is still owed on it before you pay.
Paperwork
- Chassis and engine numbers match the records
- Personal Property Securities Register (PPSR) check for money owing and write-offs
- Service history, receipts and ownership chain
Body
- Rust in sills, floors, wheel arches and boot
- Panel gaps and paint depth (signs of filler)
- Underside and chassis rails
Mechanical
- Cold start, smoke, oil leaks
- Compression test
- Gearbox, brakes, suspension, electrics
- Road test
